Artist's Description

Figureheads decorated the front of sailing vessels. They were usually an ornamental carving of a woman, mermaid, animal or mythical creature on the bow and the were widely used in centuries past. The figurehead embodies the spirit of a ship and was believed to satisfy the gods of the sea and ensure a safe voyage. The vikings displayed frightening figureheads on the front on their vessels to ward off evil spirits. Superstitions run high among sailors, so the tradition continued for centuries.
